Robert Hooke observed the cells for the first time. He observed a thin slice of cork under the microscope and found tiny compartments in the slice. Cork is a dead plant cell in the bark of certain trees. He called these compartments as cells as cells were the rooms where missionaries used to live in those days and prisoners were locked up. This led to the discovery of cells. later many scientists found that living organisms too are made of cells.
