The identity of a nation state is most often symbolized in a figure or image. In the 20th century, the identity of India came to be visually associated with the image of Bharat Mata.

The image of Bharat Mata was first created by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1870, when he wrote 'Vande Mataram' for our motherland.

The image of Bharat Mata was first painted by Abindranath Tagore.

Later, the image acquired many different forms as it was drawn by different artists.

It was first created by bankim chandra chattopadhya in his book Anandmath.
