The year 1905, in Indian history, saw a devastating state of British rule in India. The reactionary policies of Lord Curzon and the Bengal partition were examples.

Gokhle as the president of Banaras session:

  • The congress as a whole was against the policies of Curzon but they were ideologically divided.
  • They were divided into the moderates and the extremists.
  • To annihilate any violence to happen the congress choose Gokhle (who was from the moderates) to preside over the Banaras session.
  • Under Gokhle's presidency, the congress chooses their agenda to content Bengal partition and to support the swadeshi movement.
