Jacob and Monod proposed the lac operon model to explain the regulation of the synthesis of an enzyme, β-galactosidase, the lac operon in e.coli, only when lactose is available as a substrate and Glucose is not available. This was the first study of metabolic regulation based on genetic analysis of the lac system.
