Cell Theory was first proposed by 2 scientists namely :

  • Mattias Scheiden
  • Theodor Schwann

Later , this theory was modified by :

  • Rudolf Virchow

The postulates of this theory are :

  1. All living organisms are composed of one or more cells.
  2. Cells are the Structural and Functional unit of life of an organism.
  3. Cells are derived from Pre-existing cells.

The basic concept present in these postulates are :

  • Unicellular organisms have 1 cell while multicellular organisms have many cells of different capabilities
  • Each cells has its definite function and many such cells having common functions will give rise to Tissues , thereby is the building block of the organism.
  • Cells divide to give new daughter cells .

✔What is cell theory?

Cell theory is the historic scientific theory.

Cell theory is a collection of ideas and conclusions from many different scientists over time that describes cells and how cells operate.

Schleiden and Schwann both together discussed Schwann’s hypothesis and they formulated cell theory.

It was modified by Rudolf Virchow.

✔Postulates of cell theory:

☆All living organisms are made up of minute units, the cells which are the smallest entities that can be called living.

☆Each cell is made up of protoplasm with a nucleus and bounded by plasma membrane with or without a cell wall.

☆All cells are basically alike in their structure and metabolic activities

☆Function of an organism is the sum total of activities and interaction of its constituent cells.
