Answer:

Shiva himself is presented as the Nataraja performing the Ananda Tandava ("Dance of Delight") in the golden hall of the shrine Pon Ambalam. The temple is one of the five elemental lingas in the Shaivism pilgrimage tradition, and considered the subtlest of all Shiva temples (Kovil) in Hinduism.

Chidambaram Nataraja temple is said to be contemporaneous to the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple (as per some accounts, it is regarded as older than the Srirangam temple) with both having been built in the BC era. Karikala Cholan, a BC era Chola King who is said to have made Woraiyur in Tiruchirappalli his imperial capital around 200 BC is said to have received the ancestral temple of Srirangam Ranganatha (then a small temple with few shrines only) as gift from his in-laws is said to have patronized both the Chidambaram temple and the Srirangam Ranganatha as the tutelary deities of his dynasty/empire. This means that because Karikalan of Woraiyur was not the first BC era chola king, the practice of worship and endowments to Chidambaram temple (at least) along with Srirangam Ranganatha lasted for around 4–5 centuries before him, i.e. at least from 650–600 BC. The Cholas are the second oldest empire in India having originated less than a century after the Pandyas who are known to have existed since 750 BC.
