Explanation:

Why does the Prince of Arragon reject the gold and lead caskets?

The Prince of Arragon was arrogant. He had much ego. At first, he went to the lead casket which declares :”Who chooseth me must give and hazard (risk) all he hath”. But he was not willing to take risk for the unattractive lead casket. He, therefore, refused the lead casket.

Then he went to the gold casket which declares : “Who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire”. But he didn't want to be like “many men” and he will not be attracted by flashy things. So, he, quite wisely, rejected the gold casket.

( But finally he came to the silver casket which declares : “Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves”. He was foolish in thinking that he deserved Portia more than anyone else. So, he chose the silver casket which contained the picture of a ‘blinking idiot’.)

Prince Arragon and Bassanio rejected the golden casket.

Prince Arragon rejected the golden casket because often gold plated tombs have worms inside and later choses silver casket. Also he does not wanted to be among the foolish mejority who run after outside beauty.

While, Bassanio rejected the same for the reason, Gold shows the outward beauty and the person who choses the golden casket usually see only the outside beauty and not the inside beauty. He also denied to chose it as King Midase could not eat that gold .
