Who restricted expansion of Rajputs
Answers
It was the Mughals – especially during the rule of Akbar, who initially restricted the expansion of Rajputs, through their diplomacy. Some Rajput rulers served the Mughals and also got into alliances with them, helping Akbar to lay the foundation for Mughal rule in India.
Later on, Aurangzeb – Akbar’s great-grandson, was hostile and intolerant against Rajput and Hinduism as a whole.
In the late 18th century, Rajputs formed alliances with the British East India Company.
Akbar was the first Mughal emperor to pursue a planned policy vis-à-vis the Rajputs.
His liberal and secular outlook towards the Rajputs ensured that their expansion was effectively checked.
He preferred to befriend them instead of turning them into his enemies.
He followed three principles:
A. Captured the strongholds of the Rajputs, reducing their ability to resist.
B. Those rulers who accepted his suzerainty or entered into matrimonial relations were voluntarily left masters of their kingdoms.
C. Those who did not accept his power were attacked and forced to accept his sovereignty.
