Pungi was a musical instrument which produced a very shrill and unpleasant sound and was banned by Aurangzeb.

It was later revived by a barber of a family of professional musicians, who had access to the royal palace. He tried to improve the tonal quality of pungi. He chose a pipe with a natural hollow stem longer and broader than pungi and made seven holes on the body. It was played before the royalty and everyone was impressed. Since it was played in the Shah's chamber and was played by a nai ( barber ), it was given the name ' Shehnai' .
