Mr. Frank said the lines:

The lines are taken from the English literature story, 'the browning version' Frank is a teacher who is described as young and fairly new to the job and therefore more in touch with the younger generation.

  • Taplow is one of the students, studying in the school in the lower fifth, who was sent into the teacher's room to complete extra work for the other teacher, Mr. Crocker Harris.
  • Mr. Crocker Harris is one of the other teachers who was quite feared by the students.
  • The following lines occur in the scene where Mr. Crocker had not yet arrived and Mr. Frank was talking to the young boy. Taplow was describing how Mr. Crocker had made a joke nobody had understood but he had laughed out of pity which in turn had landed him in trouble.
