Explanation:
There were many great lessons, but there was one in particular which was most impactfull. I implemented it in my life and it has saved me twice already.
Don't make decisions when you are emotional (angry, sad, anxious, guilty etc). They calm your soul down at that moment, making you believe that you have done the right thing, but later they turn out to be bad for you and the society around you.
Examples...
Bhishma took an oath to serve the country and never marry. Why? Because of his love for his father. He was emotional at that time and took an oath. He was the only capable person at that time who could lead his kingdom. Because of his oath, the kingdom remained kingless, for two generations.
Gandhari took an oath to close her eyes forever. She hated darkness but when she had to marry Dhritrashtra who was blind by birth, she got upset. She couldn't handle the fact that she is destined to marry a blind person. To calm her mind and heart, she took an oath to close her eyes forever. Had she not done that, she could have saved her sons from her brother Shakuni.
Pandu decided to quit the kingdom because of guilt of killing a Maharshi. Had he stayed in the kingdom and thought about welfare of the thousands of people who lived in his kingdom, and performed his duties; things would have been very different.
Dhritrashtra was not a good king just because of his extraoridinary love for his son. Again, too emotional.
Karna decided to devote his life to his friend Duryodhna; in return of his favors and as he felt thankful of him. He was rejected by the whole society but accepted by Duryodhna. He was deeply touched and out of the feeling of true dedication, he took an oath to serve him forever. In turn, he became the participant of many misdeeds of Duryodhna. Eventually got killed by his own brothers.
