The first jute millwas establishedat Rishra, on the River Hooghly near Calcutta in 1855 when Mr. George Acland brought jutespinning machinery from Dundee. Four years later, thefirst power driven weavingfactory was set up. By 1869, fivemills were operating with 950 looms.
