Lord Dalhousie started Doctrine of lapse to deal with questions of succession to Hindu Indian states.
Dalhousie freely applied the doctrine of lapse. According to it a dependent state would pass into British hands if the ruler died without a natural heir contrary to age - old Hindu and Islamic traditions.
It denied the adopted children the right to inherit the throne. Satara, Sambalpur.Udaipur, Nagnur, and Jhansi were all annexed under this policy
