Revolt of 1857 was known as the first war of independence because it was for the first time that our entire nation irrespective of the caste, creed, race, and religion had come together and staged an armed protest against the Britishers to gain independence from their colonial rule. It took another 90 odd years for Subhash Chandra Bose to form the Azad Hind Sena to fight against the British. Although the 1st war of Independence had failed, it continued to inspire scores and scores of freedom fighters who sacrificed their precious lives for the freedom of our nation. Our freedom has come for a big price. Always remember this and feel proud to be born in an independent nation, INDIA.

Revolt of 1857 is called the first war of independence as:

It made an impact on a significant part of our country, but not the entire Indian subcontinent. For example: Entire South India region was not at all impacted by the revolt. Certain large princely states such as Kashmir and Mysore were neutral.

In a way, it would also to be a misnomer to call it “First”. Because in Indian history, revolts were initiated earlier as well such as in 1829 (much earlier than 1857), Tirot Sing, raised a revolt in northeast region against colonialism of Khasi hills.

Probably, it is called first independence war because of active participation of masses like workers and farmers. Surely, It was the first war of masses against colonialism at a large scale.

Actually this term- First war of Independence, was coined by V D Savarkar. And if we go through facts of this historical turn of events, it was indeed the first war. It was like awakening among mass of India that they are being dominated, exploited by an alien force.

Well question is why it is called so, fairly, because:

Military rebellion as a lot of practices involved in military expeditions were bound to disrespect religion of both Hindu - Muslim Community. Introduction of Enfield rifles sparked this. Military expeditions were across the seas and it was unsacred for the Brahman to cross the sea. Also, the Oudh rebellion and the Afghan War shattered the British Invincibility.

Trade of India was totally Monopolized and the Indian craftsmanship was suppressed with decrease in exports.

Stale Food crops were replaced with Cas crops like opium, cotton, jute and indigo. Peasants were forced to grow this crops despite a streak of famine or drought years. Also, sometimes during drought years, farmers were asked to pay for revenue much greater than original amount.

Also zamindari system exploited too much of the peasants. And even some of disloyal zamindars had their lands confisticated with uneven means and they were left without any source of income and ashamed to beg.

Several British officials tried to convert a lot of Indian people to Christianity, which was not just the task they were entitled to. Also, several priests were furious over there social and religious reforms like widow remarriage that Britishers were coming up within Indian Society. Former thought of it as ultimate insult to their religion and faith.

Provocative policies adopted by Britishers like on adopted by Governance General Of India, Lord Dalhousie’s Doctrine of Lapse, further fueled the already strong and unwavering discontent among Indian people against alien rule.

So it was actually a first of its type of rebellion that was on a national scale. Although, nationalism was not primary agenda as they helmed Bahadur Shah of Mughal Empire as their emperor. But it was the first significant act done by people to get rid of alien rule.

The Indian Rebellion of 1857 is also called the Indian Mutiny, the SepoyMutiny, North India's First War of Independence or North India's first struggle for independence. It began on 10 May 1857 at Meerut, as a mutiny of sepoys of the British East India Company's army.
