Frederick Winslow Taylor, the father of scientific management, strongly advocated the piece wage sytm in the 19th century.

Earlier piece wage system was practiced in the factories of England during the Industrial revolution.

Then wages were calculated on the basis of output. Higher the output, higher the wages.

FW Taylor introduced differential piece wage system where different rates were assigned to different categories of output.
