According to the known records , the first ever selfie of a person was taken long back in 1839! weird yet true ....The lucky person was Robert Cornelius , a pioneer in photography in those times , he was also an amateur chemist . this "selfie" was actually a self portrait of himself , that later came to be known as selfie. . as mentioned earlier , the credit of first selfie goes to Robert Cornelius. but , the term "selfie" was coined much much later in around 2005 by Jim Krause. kudos to him!

In 1839, who knew that Robert Cornelius's self portrait will make a new trend in the 21st century? Robert Cornelius is known to be the man who took the first ever selfie. The origin of selfie is said to be done by this man. He set his camera, removed the lens and sat for a minute in front of the camera. At the back of his photo, he wrote the word 'The first light picture ever taken.'

According to the dictionary, selfie is a photo taken of oneself with a phone or a web camera and posts it on social media. But Cornelius's self portrait is said to be the photo that carved way for selfie. This first selfie was taken in Philadelphia, a city in Pennsylvania. Robert Cornelius rushed at the back of his family's lamp store to take the world's first selfie.

Taking this photo was extremely difficult as there wasn't much advanced technology at that time. But being a part of the family that runs a lamp store, he knew a bit about silver plating and the art of understanding light. Thus, it is said that he silver plated the lens carefully, and he stood at the back of his store for about 15 minutes searching for a place with light that is required.

According to reports, the term selfie was first used in 2002 in an australian online forum post. In australia, it is common to use 'ie' as a suffix. For example mozzie for mosquito and aussie for the word australian. The word selfie. So that ,means, selfie → self + ie.

After the selfie in 1839, In 1880, Paul Cazzane had his own self portrait made too. In 1907, Pablo Picasso made his own self portrait in the abstract form making it world's first abstract selfie. In 1940, Frida Kahlo had a selfie explaining her pain during her divorce making a meaningful selfie. In 2002, a drunk man tripped over and accidently takes the world's first selfie using technology.

The trend of selfie rose drastically during the late 2012. It took almost a decade for selfies to become worldwide famous. But, these days, selfies are the main cause of death in young people.
