Answer: Special Commissioner Captain Charles Holroyd

Explanation:

Maniram Dewan also known as Maniram Dutta Baruah played an importanat role in establishing tea gardens in Assam.

During 1850, Maniram had been facing immense administrative obstacles in putting up private tea plantations . The main reason for such a situation was because of the stiff opposition from European tea planters.

The uprising of the Indian sepoys against the British gave a perfect ground to Maniram  to restore the Ahom rule. He wrote letters in coded  form to Piyali Baruah, who was given the responsibility to carry out the duty as the chief advisor of Kandarpeswar in his absence.

Through these letters he urged Kandarpeswar Singha was to start a campaign against the British by joining hands with the sepoys at Dibrugarh and Golaghat.

Maniram was arrested in Calcutta and kept in  Alipur jail before shifting to Jorhat. His letters to Kandarpeswar was intercepted by the Special Commissioner Captain Charles Holroyd, who judged the trial.

On 26 February 1858, he along with Piyali Barua were hanged publicly at the Jorhat jail.

Hope it helps.
