In the second part, Gratiano's light hearted behaviour is projected which offers a contrast to Antonio's melancholy.
Gratiano is presented as a talkative man. Bassanio says to Antonio that Gratiano indulges in such idle talk much more than any other man in Venice. Bassanio further says that Gratiano's reasons " are as two grains of wheat hid in two bushels of chaff : you shall seek all day ere you find them , and when you have them, they are not worth the search." Gratiano is a friend of Antonio and Bassanio. Whenever Antonio is sad, Gratiano cheers him up.
