100%. Welding is a brilliant career path and can also lead to a multitude of future opportunities if you ever wanted to get off the tools: sales, supervision, management etc.

Welding itself is a tough job often done in even tougher conditions so don’t kid yourself that it will be easy. That said, the pay is also high so the rewards are there if you don’t mind the rough stuff and continue to develop your skills over time, just like you need to in any industry.

Many of the responses below mentioned that welding is dangerous and bad for your health. Welding does not need to be dangerous if you take the right precautions and wear the right Personal Protective Equipment.

It was always assumed that welding fume was carcinogenic but recently in 2017, the IARC (International Agency for the Research On Cancer) reclassified welding fume as carcinogenic. Confirming suspicion and putting the debate to rest. Everyday I still hear welders saying that drinking milk will protect them or getting their heads out of the plume will suffice. Or even worse, they smoke anyway so what’s the difference.

Do yourself a favour, if you do choose welding as a career don’t listen to the tough guys. They’ll also tell you that wearing a seat belt or looking before you cross a road is soft. Do your own research (
