Middle class and their role in French Revolution​:

Industrialisation began in England in the second half of 18th century. But in France it occurred only during the 19th century. Western and parts of Central Europe witnessed growth of industrial production and trade. with the growth of Industrial revolution, many social groups came into being in France. They were : working class population, industrialists, businessmen, and educated people. These were the growing middle class population in France.

These middle class people stood for national unity and liberalism and for the abolition of aristocratic privileges. The working class population formed Trade Unions. Educated men formed political groups and secret organizations and conducted debates for spreading the ideas of national unity and liberalism.

Women had started coming out of their houses because of industrial revolution and they too formed their own political organizations. Women and non-propertied men organised opposition movements demanding equal political rights and universal suffrage. The industrialists demanded freedom of markets and abolition of restrictions on the movement of goods and capital. All these groups together fought for liberalism which finally made the emperor abdicate his throne and flee.

The middle class was the social group and they comprised of ‘court officials’, lawyers, and ‘administrative officials’. The middle class were the main educated thinkers who wanted a change in France.
