Actually, there was more to it, in Lincoln’s view. In the memorable Lincoln-Douglas debates, one of Lincoln’s principle arguments was that american version of democracy/republican government… which was
necessarily jefforn' s version… boldly proclaims that “All men are created equal.”

Now, interpretation is everything. Did Lincoln mean by this, that all men and women come into this life with the same abilities? No. Jefferson did not mean that, either.

Does it even mean that we should expect people of all races to have exactly the same abilities on average? No, it doesn’t necessarily mean that, either. Not to Jefferson or to Lincoln. And Lincoln felt forced to qualify his statements by saying, “I am not advocating for the complete social equality of the Negro and the white man”… a statement that seems racist by today’s standard.

But what Lincoln took the words “All men are created equal” to mean was that no man was so much better than another that he had the right to rule over that other man, without that man’s consent.

Today, of course, most of us would be quick to add, that women (of every race, of course) must be made part of this same equation.
