He was central figure in a murder case that inspired novels by Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson.
Alan meets Davie aboard Covenant.
Alan was traveling in small boat heading to France when his vessel hit Covenant and sank.
He is only survivor of his boat.
Alan is carrying belt full of gold that tempts Captain Hoseason to attack him where Davie helps Alan defend himself.
Alan controls beating Captain Hoseason and demands to be dropped off.
