He is mostly known in the Indian subcontinent for the folk tales which focus on his wit. Birbal had a good sense of humor and a great presence of mind. Birbal was the only Hindu navaratna in Akbar's court and was also the only Hindu to follow the Din-i-Ilhai, the religion introduced by Akbar because of his faithfulness to the king. Birbal was adept in both prose and poetry, as well as specialized in music.
