Explanation:

History of Assam - This post is about Captain Welsh Conquest against the Moamariya Rebels at the instance of Ahom Kings..This post is to discuss how and why a small amount of British Soldiers were able to defeated thousands of Moamariya Rebels. Background-After rebels occupied the capital in first rebellion, the royalist forces were able to chase them back and Lakshmi Singha was again put into throne. However he died soon and Gaurinath Singha ascended the throne. He was a very cruel ruler and a bitter enemies of Moamariyas and lost no opportunity of oppressing them. After an unsecessful attempt by Moamariyas to kill the king Gaurinath Singha,it was decided by him and Borbarua mainly that the only solution is the Wholesale Extermination of those belonging to Moamariya sect.As a result general massacre of Moamariyas were carried out where thousands including women and children were killed. This further aggravated the problem and rebellion broke out at many places and this time the rebels were determined to fight till death bcoz of the resentments against the brutalities conducted upon them and soon the capital was occupied by rebels. Sought Help from British-King Gaurinath Singha, after losing his capital to the rebels and unable to defeat them, contacted Governor General Lord Cornwallis and sought his help. Captain Thomas Welsh of the Bengal Army was sent to help the King of Assam with six companies of sepoys (each company having 60 fighting men). The whole unit didnt exceed 550 men and included a small medical corps under Dr John Peter Wade. The Moamariya rebels were in thousands. By early 1794, Captain Welsh began negotiations with the Moamariyas in upper Assam. Those fell through and it was decided to use force against them. British Weapons-By the 1790s, the Companys troops were provided the Short-land Pattern .75 caliber flintlock musket and the India pattern (highly accurate) of the same musket. This weapon, popularly known as the Brown Bess, was used in the Napoleonic Wars, too, with great success. Troops in Captain Welshs detachment had any of these two muskets or both. This was a high-performance musket, which was easier to load; in fact, it took about a minute (average 43 seconds for three shots) for an expert soldier to fire four rounds. British Battle Strategy-British troops would form two rows, and the front row would kneel. All guns would open up at the same time. This tactic was called volley fire. In a typical line formation, troops would fire their muskets one after the other. When the last man on one side had fired his weapon, the first man on the other end was ready for his next shot. This way, constant fire could be maintained. With the kind of weapons they had,no man, would find it easy to advance in face of constant gun fire. Comparison with weapons and battle techniques of Moamariya Rebels-In contrast, the Moamariyas were poorly armed and poorly led who were mostly farmers. They were completely alien to European fighting style. Besides, they didnt have any firearms barring a few matchlocks, which were obsolete and stood no chance against the Brown Bess..But as said earlier there was so much resentment against Ahom Regime that they were determined to fight till death. Most Rebels fought with whatever weapon they could find: swords, pikes, pick-axes, spears, and even bamboo sticks and were able to kill a few British soldiers but thousands of Moamariya rebels were killed and the capital was secured placing Gaurinath Singha on throne. Expedition called back-However the rebels were not fully defeated but In 1794, when Sir John Shore replaced Lord Cornwallis, he recalled the expedition of Captain Welsh. The team went back with tales of Assam, which helped the British to intervene in its affairs once again in the future and colonize it. In a way Ahom monarchy almost ended at that time and couldnot have been restored without the help of British.
