Charles Robert Darwin was a British naturalist. When he was 22 years old he set out on a voyage of 5 years. This took him to Sourth America and the island off its coast. After studying various plants and animals species there, he formulated various hypothesis. These helped him to purpose the theory of natural selection. But he did not know the mechanism whereby variations arose in species. He also conducted studies on the role of earthworms in soil fertility.
