The Misty Hour by Manoj Das, is more a political story rather than a love story. The crucial part of the story is interlaced around 2 key characters: Chinmoy Babu, an upright political leader and the beautiful, affluent and well-educated lady Roopwati

EXPLANATION:

  • Chinmoy was a party member in Roopwati’s party and was considered as gentleman amongst the party members. He was different from the rest of the members. He had a promising career as a singer and an artist. He had written several original articles, however only very few people had known he was talented and intelligent, as Chinmoy was very humble and reserved. Though he made more sacrifices for India’s freedom struggle, he did not command any influence within the party.
  • However a time came when the party members and others were disillusioned with their loudmouth leaders, the party had realised that they needed revivification of their unsung heroes. It was during that time that the town was declared city and the post of the mayor was open. Several political leaders made a beeline for it literally thwarting others in the process. However some old sincere party leaders supported Chinmoy Babu and he went on to win. Later Chinmoy Babu even became a member of Rajya Sabha.
  • He was also known as an incorruptible reader and was contesting for the post of the Chief Minister due to his this trait. However he was trapped in a false molestation scandal by Roopwati (another party member and senior leader who had a strong command and influence in the part and who wanted to please and woo him and even offered to manage his Chief Minister campaign, but Chinmoy never budged and disagreed), but he had come out of it after the clean after the truth was relieved by another member named Dhani Chowdhury.
  • Roopwati was also a party member who participated in the freedom struggle. She came from a well-known, reputed and rich family and was well-qualified. She was smart, dashing and a fluent speaker. However she always had the habit of extolling herself.  She had a strong influence within the party and leaders who had strong powers feared her as they knew she could easily strip them of their reputation layer by layer like peeling an onion. She always tried to woo Chinmoy Babu despite the fact Chinmoy not liking it and even stated to others that Chinmoy was her lover! She went on to the extent of accusing Chinmoy of molesting her, however another party member named Dhani Chowdhury who was the party’s treasure, had confessed it was him who had done it and Chinmoy was innocent.
  • Before the party could clearly ascertain Roopwati’s accusation against Chinmoy and Dhani Chowdhury’s confession Roopwati died of pneumonia.  After her death, Roopwati was buried near ruins of a by the lake in the outskirts of the city.  On her death Chinmoy grieved over her death. Though Chinmoy always expressed displeasure of Roopwati’s forceful and unwarranted presence around him, he cried a lot over her death. He went to Roopwati’s deserted pyre and laid a bouquet and wept bitterly. This give us the doubt if Dhani Chowdhury’s confession was indeed true? This hour is misty for the author who was watching Chinmoy Babu’s movements and gestures.
