Dietrich brandis a German expert was appointed as the first inspector General of forests in India. He introduced the system of scientific forestry in India. For protection of forests he divided them into three categories - reserved, protected, and village forests. He is notable for three reforms introduced for management of Indian forests.
- He set up the Indian Forest Service in 1864 and helped to formulate the Indian Forest Act of 1865.
- He introduced the notion of scientific forestry where in place of natural forests, one type of trees were planted in straight rows.
- He set up the Imperial Forest School in Dehradun in 1906.
