Evans was a prisoner. Prison staff called him 'Evans the Break' because he had successfully escaped from prison three times before. He was a good-natured, peaceful and funny person. However, he was a kleptomaniac and had a habit of stealing things.
Evans was heading to the Golden Lion in the middle of Clipping Norton after successfully escaping from prison. He escaped by pretending to be Reverend McLeery.
The story tells of Benson, a country doctor, who received a call one day in the middle of the night from one of his clients. Client Ott Sorley asked him to attend his wife who was about to give birth. On the way, he encounters a person waiting by the roadside. He invited him to get into his car. The man said he was a mechanic and his name was Evans. He suspects that a stranger has stolen his watch. He takes a watch from a person with a gun in his hand. But later he realizes his terrible mistake of depriving the military driver of his valuable possessions.
