Following the death of Boniface's successor, who had only been pope for a few months, the papal conclave gathered in 1305, and after an impasse and some violent discussions, Pope Clement V, a Frenchman, was elected, who decided not to move to Rome and instead stay in France. Pope Clement V decided against coming to Rome and instead chose to stay in France. This could have been partly a result of the French monarch, who undoubtedly believed that having the head of the mediaeval Church in his own backyard, as it were, would be advantageous to him.
The French king may have influenced Pope Clement V's decision to move the pope to France because having the papacy in his own country would benefit the king.
