Franz was a little boy who doesn't like to study. He lived in France.But during the world war the Alsace & Lorraine ( parts of France ) was captured by Germany. It ordered that German must be taught in schools of Alsace & Lorraine.

so it was Franz 's last french class.Due to this Franz was very much sad. And when he heard Mr. hamel's emotional speech he got interest in learning French.
