The intruder thought this was the right bet for him but Gerrard knew that the intruder/criminal was not so smart. Gerrard then cooked up his own story to finally trap the intruder in the cupboard by fooling him that it was the door to the garage[where cars are kept].

He convinced the intruder to go with him, and as the intruder was inspecting the garage he pushed him into a cupboard and knocked the revolver out of his hands. Then called to cops and informed them.
