Gopati was the head of the Jana community during the Rig Vedic period
EXPLANATION:
- During the Rig-Vedic period, power lied within a patriarchal family known as Kula. The family’s head was called as Kulapa. A number of such families made up a Grama that was regulated by a village head-man known as Gramini.
- The groups of the villages belonged to a clan known as Vis and several clans formed a community known as Jana. The Chief of the tribe Jana was Rajana. Rajana was not really a king, in fact, a defender of the tribe as well as the cattle wealth.
- Actually, there was no real state structure or territory or for that matter an actual King. Since Rajana was the people’s leader and not the monarch of any territory, he was called Gopati Janasya or Janasya Gopa.
