Lemuel Gulliver hailed from Nottinghamshire in England. He was the third of five sons and his father was a farmer. He went to Cambridge and spent three years there. Owing to poor financial condition of his parents, Gulliver started working as an apprentice to Mr. Bates, a London based surgeon. He continued working with him for four years and during this period he studied Mathematics and Navigation, hoping to take a sea journey. Later, he borrowed some money to study medicine at Leyden. After his return from Leyden, Mr Bates recommended him to join the crew of a ship named Swallow as a surgeon.
After three and a half years of traveling Gulliver decided to settle in London and married Mary Burton, the daughter of a hosier.
