Johannes Gutenberg is a German inventor, printer, and publisher.

  • He is best known for introducing the modern printing press in Europe. He began experimenting with the printing press in 1440 and returned to it in 1450. This device was a mechanical movable-type printing press. To this day, it is considered one of the most important inventions in the history of mankind as it not only perfected printing but allowed for the ready-to-use commercialization of printing.
  • The first book to be printed by Gutenberg was the Bible in 1455 which was published by Gutenberg and his associates, Johann Fust and Peter Schoeffer. It went on to sell for 30 30 florins; to this day, only 21 complete Gutenberg Bibles still exist today.
  • Guttenberg died on 3 February 1468 in Mainz, Germany, where he was born. To this day, he is considered one of the greatest inventors in the world.
