Hassan is the son of Ali and Sanaubar. His mother runs away shortly after Hassan's birth, perhaps due to the disfigurement of his cleft lip. In addition to this birth defect, Hassan is also Hazara. The Hazaras are a minority group in Afghanistan that are the frequent target of harassment.
