A leading light of the reform movement was the young Henry Lui Vivian Derozio. He joined the Hindu College as a teacher at the age of seventeen. He taught here from AD 1826-1831. He and his students called DErozians or Young Bengal promoted radical reformist ideas among the people of Bengal.

Henry Louis Vivian DeRozio is a young teacher at the age of 23 in the Hindu College and Social and Cultural History of Bengal. He received his education from Dharmatala Academy. He joined the group of professors of English and history at the Hindu College. He was a rationalist. He did not accept anything without justice. He wanted to make his students think of rational liberation. He founded a debate meeting called Maniktala Academic Association in 1831 AD. Under his leadership, a group started an extremist movement aimed at reforming Bengali society. DeRozio and his followers are known as Navya Banga Gosthi and the movement he initiated is known as Nava Banga Andolan.
