Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar was one of the most prominent reformers during the Renaissance of Bengal in mid nineteenth century. He used ancient texts to suggest that the practice of sati was illegal, widows could remarry and many others. His suggestion was adopted by other British officials and reformers as well and a law was passed in 1829 banning sati and in 1856 permitting widow remarriage. He also contributed in women's education.
