James Augustus Hicky was an Irishman and he launched the first printed newspaper in India, Hicky's Bengal Gazette.

He spent two years in jail for debt. Hicky believed that  freedom of the press is  necessary to a free government.

Governor-General Warren Hastings treated him cruelly and encouraged the publication of officially sanctioned newspapers.
