James Augustus Hicky was an Irishman, who launched first printed newspaper of India on January 1780, with the name Bengal Gazette, it was also known as Hicky's Bengal Gazette.
His "Bengal Gazzette" was a weekly magazine ,"a commercial paper , open to all and influenced by none."It contained a lot of advertisements ,even about import and trade of slaves. There was a lot of Gossip about the Company's senior officials in India. This made General Warren Hastings angry so that he persecuted Hickey.
