Krishna wanted to re-establish good rule. Most rulers of that time forgot their duties towards their people and country. They were indulged in pleasure and ill practices beyond the limit of correction. To establish good rule, annihilation of most of the kings was required.
Had Krishn told Pandav about their elder brother, probably they would have accepted Karn as their emperor.
If Karn knew about his relation with Pandav earlier, he would have persuaded Duryodhan not to go to limit of war. Or would not have given words to Duryodhan which will make him fight his own brothers. If Karn had fought from Pandav side, they would have won the battle with little effort. In either case total annihilation was not possible. The fight was so balanced that almost all kings and big warriors from both sides died. The next generation of Pandav was wiped too. Only survival was King Prakshit (son of Abhimanyu). And through Prakshit a new rule of righteousness started which lasted for quite some time.
