Kwame Nkrumah was a teacher and a staunch advocate for Pan-Africanism who led the country of Ghana to its independence. He went on to become the first prime minister and president of Ghana. He became an inspiration to the democratic movements in other African countries.
Generally when Kwame was elected as leader of Ghana he had the backing of his nation and almost that of the entire African continent. However, sometime in the mid 1960's his regime started deviating from the path of democracy when he declared himself president for life and put a ban on all opposition parties. This led to many being detained and losing their individual rights.
