Lachit Borphukan (24 November 1622 - 25 April 1672) was a commander and Borphukan (Phu-Kon-Lung) in the Ahom kingdom,[1] located in present-day Assam, India, known for his leadership in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat that thwarted a drawn-out attempt by Mughal forces under the command of Ramsingh I to take over Ahom kingdom.[2][3] He died about a year later due to illness.[4]

LaChit was the fourth son of Seng Kaluk Mo-Sai (a Tai-Ahom priest) and he was the Commander-in-Chief (or "Phu-kan") of the Ahom army) under Susenghphaa. He was born in Seng-Long Mong, Charaideo to a family of Tai Ahom community and he was a follower of Ahom religion.
