Coachman Ali is one of the protagonists of Dhumketu's short story, "The Letter". Ali had been waiting patiently for five years for a letter to arrive, from his estranged daughter Miriam, providing him news of her well-being . When the letter failed to arrive, Ali gave a few gold coins to Lakshmi Das, a clerk in the Post Office. In return of the money, Ali extracted a promise from the clerk that when the letter from Miriam finally arrived, he would lay it on Ali's grave so that his father's soul would be finally laid to rest.

Hope this helps you

Laxmi Das was the postmaster who had bought money from Ali for delivering the letter when it comes.
