The hack Driver by Harry Sinclair Lewis is the story of a hack driver named  Oliver Lutkins, and he lived at New Mullion. He was an key witness in a court case. The narrator of the story explains that after his graduation he started working with a prominent law firm in the city. He was working as an assistant clerk there. He was not really happy with his work of serving summons because sometimes when representing them he had to face difficult circumstances. One day, he was asked to serve summons to one Oliver Lutkins, who was in several cases a key witness. He stayed in New Mullion, a small town.

Explanation:

  • The narrator's first visit to New Mullion was a complete failure.  He could not find even a trace of Oliver Lutkins.  In reality, this failure was caused by the delivery man and Bill, the hack driver who the narrator met him at the station. The prosecutor told him that he knew where he generally stood around the areas where Lutkins was standing.
  • Bill was the lawyer's mate, assuring him that he knew the places Lutkins used to hang. He said a lie that only an hour ago he saw Lutkins. Then Bill led the narrator to different parts of the city and met people.
  • Obviously, when Bill learned that the narrator was searching for Oliver Lutkins, he plotted this whole fake drama. He kept the narrator  at the door standing behind him everywhere he went. He didn't allow Lutkins to explicitly interrogate people.
  • They headed to the barber's shop and pool room in Fritz, Gustaf and Gray. Everywhere they got the same answer that Lutkins had left only a while ago. All this was pre-planned by Bill and the search was bound to end in failure.
