Mangal Pandey was an Indian soldier who played a key part in events immediately preceding the outbreak of the Indian rebellion of 1857. He was a sepoy in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry regiment of the British East India Company. Wikipedia

Mangal Pandey was a Brahmin soldier, who refused to use the greased cartridges on 29th March, 1857 and killed two English officers. He was hanged consequently, this resulted in general uprising in Meerut, Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow and Jhansi.
