Domenico Scandella (1532–1599), also known as Menocchio, was a miller from Montereale, Italy, who in the 16th century was tried by the Inquisition for his unorthodox religious views, and burnt at the stake for heresy in 1599.
He reinterpreted the message of the Bible and formed his own views of God that enraged the Roman Catholic Church. Menocchio was declared a heretic and ultimately executed. The Roman Catholics then imposed severe controls over publishers and booksellers, and began to maintain an Index of Prohibited Books.
