Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni of Afghanistan ruled from 997 to 1030.He attacked India 17 times in search of wealth.He mainly raided the temples as he believed that all the wealth and gold of India was hidden in the temples.He attacked Somnath, Mathura, Nagarkot and Kannauj. He was a patron of art and culture and even established a library.He was interested in knowing about the art and cultures of the Indian people. Hence, he hired Al- Beruni, a scholar to pen down the details of the people and culture of India.

He was mainly interested in capturing Northern India and expanding his kingdom.His first invasion against Multan was successful followed by invasion of Sindh and Punjab. He lost his first battle of Tarain in 1191 against Prithvi Raj Chauhan who was the king of Delhi. He won the second battle of Tarain in 1192 and captured Delhi and Ajmer and established Muslim rule in India.He was courageous and strong and was focussed in his aim of expanding Muslim rule in India.

Mu'izz ad-Din Muhammad Ghori (Persian: معز الدین محمد غوری), born Shihab ad-Din (1149 – March 15, 1206), also known as Muhammad of Ghor, was the Sultan of the Ghurid Empire along with his brother Ghiyath ad-Din Muhammad from 1173 to 1202 and as the sole ruler from 1202 to 1206.
