Montmorency was a dog, though it behaved like a human being.
The narrator initially thinks about him that:
He expresses his disapproval for going up the river in his own way. It is because unlike a human being, he doesn't have any liking for the beautiful scenes of nature, nor does he smoke like a human being.
He is not allowed to chase a rat either. He also doesn't like the idea of being pushed on board by the three friends when he goes to sleep.
