When lord vishnu incarnate on this earth, many devas like Indra and others incarnate to assist him. It is not that Vishnu alone is not competent to kill the demons,but all these demigods wants enjoy the mellows of his Lila . So when rama came, many demigods took monkeys form to assist him. Like when Krishna was to appear, all demigods started planing how will they incarnate on earth. Moon God (Chandra deva) was not ready to send his son varchas to incarnate as he is very attached to him. When other demigods persisted, Chandra deva said OK but with one condition that his son should return to him after 16 years and he son should kill one quarter of enemies army before returning and his father should be a great hero. Then Indra granted his wish and said that varchas will become the son of Nara(Arjuna) and nephew of narayana (Krishna).and his mother was Vishnu's great energy yoga Maya (subhadra).
This is his background. But when varchas appeared on subhadra's womb, he heard about warfare from Arjuna, when latter one was explaining them to subhadra.
