The Ottoman caliphate was enacted by the British Government . This law disempowered the position of the caliph who was considered as the Supreme holy leader of the Muslims.

The Muslims wanted the position of the caliph back and for this there arose this historic mass movement known as the khilafat movement (1919 - late 1922 ). The Awad brothers led the movement and recruited several other famous personalities like Muhammad Junejo and Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari in the movement. Their demand was that

The British government shall abolish the Ottoman caliphate. This movement was mostly dominated and put forward by the Muslim residents of British India. Non Muslims were mostly not a part of this movement.
